Bit confused with the usage of "happens/happened to be".Where can it be used appropriately.

Here are some examples of "happen to be"

I wondered why I hadn't seen him in a week. He happened to be in the hospital.
Some people are lucky all the time. Then there are those unlucky people who always just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The day I met my future wife happened to be the day that Apple's first iPhone hit store shelves. We were both waiting in line.
The Pope happened to be in Florence when I was there on vacation.
My best friend and I both happened to be born on the same day in the same hospital.

Here are some examples of "happen"
I cry when bad things happen to my friend.
Because one thing happens after another, it does not mean that the one is the cause of the other.
