Hang up

I said 'bye' and hung up the phone.

Is 'hung up' only used to disconnect a phone conversation before it's over for both parties or is it also used when both parties end a conversation in a friendly way?

anonymous hung up the phone. That is the action of pushing the "end call" button or replacing the receiver in its cradle, or whatever mechanism your phone uses to terminate a call. It has nothing to do with the type of conversation, if there is one.
