Hang on for, phoenix like rebirth, ashes of place

There were two fairy-tales that were possible today: either South Africa would do unto others what they had had done unto them twice in three Test matches by England, and hang on for a draw that looked more and more improbable; or India would complete a phoenix like rebirth from the ashes of Nagpur, and overcome the loss of play on the fourth day and of Zaheer Khan, to solidify their claim of being the top ranked Test side.

Could you please explain to me the emboldened parts?

"hang on for a draw" = somehow, with difficulty, manage to avoid being bowled out and thereby achieve a draw. "a phoenix-like rebirth from the ashes of Nagpur" (note that a hyphen is required) means a miraculous recovery from the disaster of Nagpur. The reference is to the phoenix, a mythical bird that arises reborn from the ashes of a fire.
