Can I use 'handsome' when reffering to a woman?

'Handsome' reffering to a woman would sound really queer to me. I think you'd better not use it that way.

I remember reading term "handsome" used while referring to a woman, in a couple of books. I don't know many women who would like to be called "handsome" though.It's usually taken in a bad way.

Although, the way i see it(not sure how correct is this) a handsome woman, is someone who's not too feminine and petite yet still attractive, but not in a delicate sort of way.

There is nothing wrong in referring to a woman as "handsome" - it will imply she does not have particularly feminine features or appearance, but is good-looking all the same.

I would prefer to be called handsome than merely "good-looking"

I sometimes refer to women as handsome, but I wouldn't use the term when speaking with them. To me, a handsome woman is of a dignified, sophisticated appearance. She is tall, stately and perhaps ambassadorial. She probably isn't beautiful, but no witch either. The doctor that brought me into the world 63 years ago had these qualities. Give yourself a little more time to get used to things. There have been a lot of changes and it's not unusual to feel uncomfortable at first.
