halfway

We stopped on the half way in the moutain. I began to feel that I was losing oxygen and getting fatigued.

Why are the above sentences wrong?

We stopped half way up the mountain. There is no "half way" in the mountain, but there is half way UP the mountain. " Your second sentence is okay, I think.

We stopped half way up the mountain.

There is no "half way" in the mountain, but there is half way UP the mountain. But even so, there are many places around the mountain that are half way up, so don't use "the."
