Half to death?

I know the expression 'scare someone half to death' but how about this one?

"He was one of those energetic teachers who loved his subject half to death."

Dees it sound okay to native?

It makes sense to me, but I'm not sure the expression is used much in the positive sense. [ I have, however, heard of a person 'smothering another in love/attention/etc'. ]

Subjects are not mortal beings. You cannot love/scare/hug a subject to death, or even halfway there.
