half expect

Hi teachers,

Could you possibly explain the meanings the sentences in bold type below?:

We were half expecting him not to come back.
"who are you?" he murmured, only half expecting her to answer
If I can't help her, how can you expect to?
He was late, but what do you expect?

Thanks in advance

Top answer

half expect = assume that something will happen, but not entirely convinced I half expected her to jump into the pool naked, she was so drunk. Because we were late, we half expected to have only dessert at the dinner party.
