half and outside

Hi,

How can I use the word 'half' and 'outside' correctly? Do you have some tips?

1. Half the class is fully involved in the activity.

Why not?

Half of the class is fully involved in the activity.

2. John is standing outside the school.

I think you can't say:

John is standing outside of the school. Why not?

How about this? Is this correct?

Outside of the school lies an electrical pole.
