Hair salon

What do you call the person who is cutting your hair in a hair salon? I remember "barber", but I think it's only for men and for beards. Is there a more general word for it?

Top answer

Barber is usually used for someone that exclusively cuts men's hair. I think that you would say "stylist" for someone working in a salon, but I've also heard "hairdresser".

Thank you Vorpar and AlpheccaStars! Can you also say "hair stylist"? I've just read "hair cutter" in a dictionary, is that a common word?
