Hadn't given

"In April 2012 I hadn’t given menopause a second thought, I was only 45. Twelve months later I had become completely consumed by it."
I read the above at https://menopausesupport.co.uk/ as part of my CPD (continue professional development) on HRT( hormone replacement therapy)
Please explain the use of past perfect "hadn't given..." and "had become completely..."
