Had you had breakfast?

Hello,

if my friend says:

I came to school at 8.30.

and I want to ask him whether he had breakfast before he came to school, how do I ask?

From a purely grammatical point of view, I think

Had you had breakfast?

is correct. Is it natural, or would a native speaker avoid the past perfect and say:

Did you have breakfast before you came to school?

What would Did you have breakfast? mean? Would it imply having breakfast at school after arrival?

Thanks in advance for your comments! Emotion: smile
