Had vs have had

Is it right to say 'we have had a lot of fun today' when I have returned home at the end of the day from a friend's house? Or would it be simply 'we had a lot of fun today'? Which one is correct in the context ?

Again, is it 'I had a bad day' or 'I have had a bad day' when referring to the whole day after I have spent it ?
