Had vs had had

Hi,

Sentence #1 is from a native speaker. #2 is my version. Do they convey different meanings?

Why the speaker chose ‘had had’ over just ‘had’?

1. Then I recounted a conversation I had had with Barbara.

2. Then I recounted a conversation I had with Barbara.

Thanks,

MG.

It's not incorrect; you can argue that it's not necessary, since you can only recount a conversation that has taken place already, and therefore there is no need to mark the order of events with the past perfect.

However, I'd probably use it here, but contracted: ... a conversation I'd had with Barbara.
