Had used to vs used to

Hey everyone!

I would like to know what is better in this case- had used to or used to.

He used to bully her a lot.

"Used to". Unfortunately I can't offer a solid reason why (passive voice?) but "had used to" doesn't fit quite right.

I think this may be an American/British English thing. For me you could say either but they have two slightly different meanings.

If you say "he used to bully her a lot", it means he is still doing it at the time the action of the (past tense) story is unfolding.

If you say "he had used to bully her a lot" it implies that he had done it at some time previous to when story is happ

Hey everyone!! I think that the diffence is stated on the tense on which they are employed. So, "had used to " is in the past perfect tense and "used to" is in the past simple tense.
