Had to be open to the darkness

Lois: Didn't Kara say that a person had to be open to the darkness? meaning??

That it can't infect anyone of pure heart?

Clark: And which one of us doesn't have that weakness?

A hidden hatred or fear that this thing couldn't prey upon? meaning??

Please let me know~

Thank you!!

The first one is reffered to the notion that somebody should have no fear if there is nothing to be afraid of. The second one just implies that the thing (whatever that means) preys on everything. Actually it doesn't make much sense to me because it is badly composed.
