with had p.p (I had bought....), can this tense be used along with present tense (usually the clause with past tense follows) in the other clause within the same sentence, or just alone as a single sentence?

I can't think of any proper sentence, but let me try.
*He had finished his work.
*He had finished his work when subj + present tensed verb.
