"Had" or no "had"

Do we need to put "had" in the bracket in the passage below.?

Amir was walking back home from school when he heard a thud on the road. A book had fallen from a bicycle that ( ) whizzed past him a moment ago.

I would include "had", but it does not seem glaringly wrong without. I prefer to reserve "ago" for use relative to now. In this case I would prefer "a moment earlier".
