"Had" or "Have"

While pursuing my diploma, I had gained some work experience.
While pursuing my diploma, I gained some work experience.
While pursuing my diploma, I have gained some work experience.

Can someone please help me here? I'm writing a cover letter for a job application, and this sentence just doesn't sound right no matter what I do. Using "had" feels wrong, because I still HAVE the experience. But using "have" sounds weird to me too. Please advise me on which is the correct choice and justify your choice. I would also appreciate it if you are able to rephrase my sentence to make it sound better.
