Had not or hadn't

In the following sentence would it be correct to use had not or hadn't for a submitted paper in APA (not sure if APA matters)?

However, I believe if I hadn’t had my siblings as touchstones, as well as supportive teachers and friends, I may not have graduated at all. *The instructor said it should have read had not. What would be the reason?

Hi, Sorry, I'm not familiar with APA. But, in my experience, people are usually told not to use abbreviations in formal writing, eg university papers or business reports. I imagine one reason is that it's hard to get people to write well at all, and if you start letting them just write in whatever way they speak and sound, standards and communication will go all to ****.
