Had never been known to...

Peter had asked him, of course, for Matthew Cuthbert had never been known to volunteer information about anything in his whole life.

Could anyone kindly explain what this sentence tries to say? I was especially confused by the phrase marked in red color.

Thanks.

There is something in Matthew's past, that Peter had asked him about. Apparently Matthew never talks about himself. In other words, no-one had ever known Peter to give out any information about himself.

Novels are a bit hard to read, but I will try. Thanks so much.
