Had it been long...?

In a conversation that goes like this:

Person 1: Maria and John went to the cinema together two weeks ago.

Person 2: Had it been long since the last time they did it?

Person 1: Yes

Is it correct to say "had it been long since... etc" or should rather be said "how long has it been since..."? How would be the correct way of asking that, aiming for a yes-no answer?

or should rather be said "how long has it been since..."? No. "How long had it been since the last time . . . . "

I'd probably ask eg "How long was it since the last time they did that?"
