Had had

I'd never given much thought to how I would die -- though I'd had reason enough in
the last few months -- but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this.

Shouldn't it be 'had had'?

Had had is only used when the main verb is have, and it is used in the past perfect tense.

When John came home last night, he was on cloud nine. He had just left a fabulous party where he'd had the time of his life.
