had had

I had had way to much to drink that night and as the night was continuing I started to feel sick and ended up puking on everyone.

IF this sentence is incorrect, is had had ever used and is it in grammatical?

Thank you!

If the past perfect is needed here, then yes, it's fine. Had had is also possible with the third conditional. If I had had more experience, I would have gotten the job.

Hi,

The sentence is fine, although one or two commas would be good.

'Have' is a verb. You can build all the tenses around it, just like any other verb..
eg
I have a headache,

What's the difference between saying:

If I had more experience, I would've gotten the job. And

If I had had more experience, I would've gotten the job.

What about these I heard on a show:

No difference. Were is better English.

<native English speaker Yes, it's used all the time, but is usually contracted to "I'd had" in colloquial speech. Actually, I think it's usually contracted even in more formal speeh as well. I would nearly always say it and write it with the contraction.

It just doesn't seem to make much sense to me. If you had more experience (now or in the future), that would not change circumstances in the past, as opposed to this mixed conditional: If I were braver, I wouldn't have chickened out.
