had/ got her hair caught

(a) Patty was embarrassed because she had her hair caught in the car door.

(b) Patty was embarrassed because she got her hair caught in the car door.

Which sounds more natural to native speakers? Besides, is there any difference in nuance between the two sentences?

Top answer

seagull Which sounds more natural to native speakers? (b) "got" has no implication that Patty purposely participated in getting her hair caught in the door. "had" can have that meaning, too, but it has the additional meaning that Patty purposely arranged for her hair to be caught in the door.

Thank you so much for your clear explanation, CalifJim.
I'm very happy because now I've got the clear picture of the problem I've thinking about for many years.
Thanks again.
