Had gone or went?

Which is preferred?

a) I never went to Europe when I was a child, but I went there last year.

a) I had never gone to Europe when I was a child, but I went there last year.

I think a)simple past is better, because it says "when I was a child", but a friend says had gone is better, because it has "never".

Thanks in advance.

Use a). The past tense is often used with never, ever and always in American English. Mark Twain said: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
