Had done/were doing/did

Hello, teachers.

The third question goes:

It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate what they ________ for me.

A had done B did C would do D were doing

I think A is correct. How about B or D?

Please!

I'd appreciate some help.

Yes, A is the expected answer, but all of the others are possible, too-- B. C and D. This is a terrible question.

By the way, how do you know that exactly A is the expected answer? =)

A is expected by the quiz writer because s/he was attempting to set up a past situation ('what they had done for me') which predated another past situation ('able to appreciate')– but s/he failed, since that is not necessarily the case presented.

Well, Mister Micawber, thank you so much. And I just wonder why C does work there. Could you please explain to us?

I guess you meant would do indicates used to do. Am I right?

No, future-in-the-past-- or just plain future if the doing has not yet taken place.
