Grammar

had done/has done

Sports analyst talking about a boxer's prior fights a day after his most recent fight where he got knocked out:

He was taunting too much in the ring this time. He had done it before in his other fights but this time he was doing it too much.

Or

He was taunting too much in the ring this time. He has done it before in his other fights but this time he was doing it too much.

Which one is correct?

Both are correct grammatically, but I'd go with 'has done' for the meaning. You say 'this time', so you are talking about a very recent event — recent enough that you can use the present 'has' instead of the past 'had' as your auxiliary verb. Just my opinion.
