He rushed out of the room in anger. She was completely taken aback and seeing that his anger had distorted his face she felt guilty of having criticized his decision to join the military. She truly loved him, but couldn't help herself offend him despite his resolute will to do what he felt necessary.


The past perfect is the most used. The action happened before he rushed our of the room, but that action is mentioned in another sentence. Is that ok? Most of the example show the action being mentioned in the same sentence. Although, I don't think that's a prerequisite, because it would be completely dumb if that mattered.
