Had better + past simple

Hello.
Today our teacher said that "had better" can be used with past simple in specific situation. I have looked up for some information in Internet to no avail. Do you have any idea or was she just wrong?

I can't see how it could be used with the simple past. The "had" in the idiom "had better", as in "You had better tell them", is an auxiliar
