Had been through

"8 years ago I was lying on my parent's couch, in constant pain, chronically tired, mentally exhausted and severely over weight wondering if I really wanted to be here.

You see, for the previous 5 years, I had been through a constant nightmare with my health. And everything I tried to make things better - medication, steroids, injections, surgery - just made me worse.

I was frustrated, angry, tired and lonely and I didn't know where to turn next.

Fast forward 8 years I captured the entire ordeal on video from the point where all my issues started.

If you've been struggling with your own health issues then I URGE you to take yourself into a room and watch this, it may just change your life forever...

After all, if you are anything like I was, you're probably done with conventional advice.

If not now, then when?"
I saw the above on Facebook.
Please explain the use of "had been" in "I had been through a constant..." and the conjunction "and" in "and everything I tried..."
