My intention had been to contact Jamal straight away after the silly miscommunication on my part, but I've been drowning with call backs and scheduled interviews all week, therefore apologies for the delayed response.

I prefer this: My intention had been to contact Jamal straight (away) after the silly miscommunication on my part, but I've been drowning with call backs and scheduled interviews all week, therefore I would like to convey my apologies for the delayed response.
