I vote for a simpler and more immediate approach. Since the appearance of a website is an ongoing process, why not express the compliment in the present tense:


I had a look at your website; it looks great.


If something changed and you only want to address how the site looked in the past, and if you're attached to "As I had...":


As I had a look at your website,
