hack / hack into

1. If someone hacks into a computer system, they break into the system, especially in order to get secret information.

No #1 is one of the definitions of the verb hack from my dictionary.
And there are two example sentences belonging to it.

2. He hacked into the bank's computer.
3. They had hacked secret data.

Q) Is "into" in #2 optional?
And if into is added between "hacked" and "secret data" in #3, does it add a slight different nuance to the original?
