"HACHURES" pronunciation and definition

I missed the word "hachures" in a spelling bee yesterday because I left the "s" off the end. Trouble is, the definition given to me was the singular one: "any of a series of short parallel lines used especially in map-making. . . ." My question is two-fold: is the "s" silent in the plural form, as it would be in the original French?; and, considering the definition given, was I right to spell the singular form?

Please help. I could use some vindication after being embarrassed on local TV!

Hi, I've never heard this word, but I would expect the 's' to be pronounced in the plural form. French words that have been taken into English do not normally retain exact French pronunciation. It sounds to me like you were correct to spell the singular form.
