Habitual action of past

When I lived in London, I was getting up at 5 am to be able to get to work by 6.
When I lived in London, I would get up at 5 am to be able to get to work by 6.
Which one is correct? If both,then which one is more natural to say?

We are talking about temporary habitual action of past here ,and it would be incorrect if we use past simple without using a time word like 'always'. What do you think, Teacher?
