Gyrate round his ankles

Hi

I read this sentence in one of my Reader's Digests. Is the word gyrate natural English?

The teacher noticed Tong's socks were gyrating round his ankles.

Thanks,

Tom

No. That sounds like his socks are alive or are powered by some kind of motor. Say eg The teacher noticed Tong's socks were flopping / sliding around his ankles.
