I we convert it to direct speech, will it be OK

Looks fine to me too, Caeser. Maybe simply Clive asked: "...".

Couldn't it also be: Clive asked, "How are we going to find the $60000..." I think "they" might or might not include Clive, from the point of view of the narrator.

I'd add a question mark:

Clive asked them, "how are you/we going to find $60,000 for the down payment on the house?"

Though in some contexts it would be more natural to use 'ever' with 'we':
