Guys, help me with one sentence.

Hi guys,

Can you please shed some light at the next sentence? I'll try and describe the context as much as I can....

Professor, who seems to be a writer of poems, is second questioning his skills. He things that the words of praise from his first professor, who taught him, were a lie...He's yelling on his wife:

You know what my first professor said about me? He said my pen must have been touched by the gods. He said my potential was unlimited.
But he was wrong. All I had was potential, nothing more. I have craft and diligence and a PhD, and it's amounted to a thousand pages of mediocrity.

Guys, can you please clarify me the red sentence? I'm really out there...Especially in the second part of the sentence.

many thanks in advance.

Best Regards

It means pretty much what it says. He has all those attributes and qualifications, and yet all he's done with them is to produce "a thousand pages of mediocrity" -- in other words, "a large amount of mediocre writing" (presumably mediocre poems, if you say he's a poet).
