Guy

Hi,

I wonder if there exits a similar word like "guy" used for females which can show the informality.

Regards,

Iman

Yeah, I agree.
Gentelman and lady, guy and gal, lad and lass collocate together.

Hi Hamid,
Thank you for your reply.
You've mentioned "lady" as a counterpart for "gentleman", but can't we use "gentlewoman" as well?

Thank you in advance,

Iman

In the US, the opposite of "guy" would generally be "lady." For example:

"There was a guy in here last night looking for you."

"There was a lady in here last night looking for you."

"Who's that guy over there?"

"Who's that lady over there?"

"Do you know that guy?"

"Do you know that lady?"

Iman, gentlewoman is correct but not common, I have heard sometimes, it is used sarcasticly.
And I agree with the Anonymous. but lady is more polite than guy.
As you can say they say;
You have to treat my daughter like a lady.
The above sentence indicates that lady is a very polite word.

'Woman' is often used, in my experience.

eg A woman phoned for you, but I said you were at lunch.
