Gunman vs. gunmen

Is there a difference in the pronunciation between the plurar and singular? Or are they both pronounced the same? How about other similar words like: airman, clergyman or salesman?

Top answer

Yes, the pronunciation is essentially the same for those words in the natural flow of speech, because the second syllable is so weak. There are a few exceptions, like the AmE mailman , which has about equal stress on both syllables.
