Vocabulary

guard, watch, look after, baby sit a child, take care of, care for

Helllo,

I want to express.: My mum is looking for my son when I have to go to work.

Can I also use the verbs "guard, watch, baby sit, take care of, care for" in this context without changing the meaning?

Thank you for your answers Mowgli

To 'look for' someone or something is to search for them when they are lost. I do hope your mum doesn't lose your son while you are at work... The sentence should read 'My mum looks after my son while I am at work' or 'My mum looks after my son when I have to go to work'.

  • guard is a bit extreme for this context - prison guards guard the prisoners, dogs guard the house against intruders.
  • baby sit - yes you could use this, but it normally refers to evenings, looking after kids while the parents are out.

Thank you for your answer, it helped me a lot.

At the end a question concerning baby sit and watch.

I have found in a dictionary that baby sit, means to take care of a child and get money for it. Is it true? If it´s true, I couldn´t use it about my mum in this sentence because she doesn´t earn money when she looks after my son.

*** My mum baby sits my son when I have to

This is good. You are right, we would normally expect to pay a baby-sitter, some one who looks after your children without payment could still be baby sitting, especially when you're talking about mothers. From reading this sentence, I would not expect you to be paying your mother, because I already know grandmothers normally d
