Guard rope

Dear all:

Please help me understand the meaning of the word combination in the subject line. The full quotation is this:

"I crowded close to the guard rope, and when the others slept, I attracted the attention of Godoso who was doing the first guard watch.

The broader context is that a group of slaves spend a night in the desert. The book is "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason.

My guess is that there is a special rope by pulling which you can attract the guard's attention.

Please help.

Best wishes,
Max

Could it be a rope enclosing the area to which the slaves were confined, around which the guards patrolled?

I assume it is the boundary like fence that encloses the slaves. If anyone crosses it, they would be trying to escape and would be caught and punished.

That sounds very plausible! Thank you for your opinion, GPY!

AlpheccaStars, thank you very much as well.

I've just checked the remainder of the chapter, and it seems that your suggestions are quite right.

Thank you all!
