guarantee

Hi~

I can't interpret the following sentece. Would you help me with it?

You can guarantee (that) the children will start being naughty as soon as they have to go to bed.

As far as I know, gurantee usually means a subject give a certain information to someby or promise somebody to do like this.:

I guarantee that he will appear in court.

But the former sentence seems not to belong to this case to me. Does it mean to the speaker 'you' seem to be the cause to make the children naughty? I'm not sure. Please help me.

Many thanks in advance

I think the "you" is a universal you, not anyone in particular. " I can guarantee (that) the children will start being naughty as soon as they have to go to bed. What you are promising is that you have knowledge of how the children will act.

  • I think the "you" is a universal you, not anyone in particular.
  • " I can guarantee (that) the children will start being naughty as soon as they have to go to bed.
  • What you are promising is that you have knowledge of how the children will act.
  • Usually because you have experienced their behavior in the past.
  • So you are not promising to do something; you are promising that you know something.

'You can guarantee here' means 'you can be certain'.

eg Whenever you plan a picnic in the park, you can guarantee that it will rain.

eg If the phone rings after midnight, I guarantee that it will be bad news.
