gruesome and grisly...

Hello there,

Here's a sentence from a MA thesis:

[...] only to swing again towards the gruesome and grisly [...]

I'm wondering... why does the author writes two words meaning basically the same thing (i.e. macabric) one after another... ? or maybe they do have different meaning?

Thx in advance
