If you want to use "grown up" in this sense, it would have to be something like:

I was grown up when I left China.

I was already grown up when I left China.

I was all grown up when I left China.

I was a grown up when I left China.

I was already a grown up when I left China.

"I was born and bred in China" is another way to say what you mean.

The sentence should be: "I was born and raised in China." The word "bred" is usually not used for humans.

I disagree. It's a commonly used (mainly British) expression to refer to humans. Besides, 'bred' rings better with 'born'.

The fixed phrase 'born and bred' is used of humans.

Thanks everybody. Can someone please explain why 'I was grown up in China' is wrong. I know it's wrong but some very stubborn person is insisting that it is correct. I tried everything to explain to this person and she still doesn't get it.

to grow up is intransitive. Intransitive verbs have no objects. Sentences without objects cannot occur in the passive voice. "I was grown up" is passive. Follow the logic and you see that it's not possible. It's not grammatical.

It implies that somebody "grew me up" where in fact

Thanks CJ. Please see attached link of a language school. It seems to think that 'I was grown up in..' is correct. http://www.mayfairschool.co.uk/Grow-up.html

I seriously doubt that's right but can you please confirm?

I think you've misunderstood that link. It says it's wrong, for the same reason CJ gave.
