Growing up female

Does "growing up female" mean "the women who are finding their place in the society"?

Context:
The most striking feature of Nike’s advertisements for women is less that they resist the objectification of women, than the way in which they do it. As Goldman and Papson have observed, this is achieved through empathy and the ‘legitimisation of the subjective experiences of growing up female in a predominantly male-defined world’.

No. It simply means 'growing up as a female', a different experience from 'growing up as a male'.

If you are born female in this (still) predominantly male-defined world then you will have different experiences throughout your growing up than those of a person born male.
