Ground-plan is picked out in the paving stones ?

Hi guys,

In the following writings, I can't understand the part marked in red.
In the sentence, what relation do the catheral's ground-plan and the paving stones have?
Does that mean that they decided to build the cathedral with the paving stones?
I know the meaning of "ground-plan" but can't catch what the author's trying to say with the words.

I hope some of you can grasp the meaning and explain it a little bit here for me.
It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks~!

Cádiz’s yellow-domed cathedral is an impressively proportioned baroque-cum-neoclassical construction but by Spanish standards very sober in its decoration. It fronts a broad, traffic-free plaza where the cathedral’s ground-plan is picked out in the paving stones. The decision to build the cathedral was taken in 1716 but the project wasn’t finished until 1838, by which time neoclassical lements, such as the dome, towers and main facade, had diluted Vicente Acero’s original baroque plan. From a separate entrance on Plaza de la Catedral, climb to the top of the Torre de Poniente for marvellous vistas.
