Groove on the record, one-sided 78s

Just exercising my role as class jackass. When I was a kid, we had one-sided 78s. There was only one groove on the record!

Granted, when there was a deep scratch across the surface, we'd often say that the needle jumped from one groove to the next!

I wonder what the author mean by "groove on the record" here. As to dictionary, groove means "a long hollow space cut into a surface" but that meaning doesn't fit in the context. Nor I have any idea what "on the record" means here.

Hi User_gary I wonder what the author mean by "groove on the record" here. This was the groove which the stylus followed in order to 'pick up' the recorded sound. If there was a scratch on the record then this would create an impression of the stylus 'jumping' from one groove to another.

  • 78 refers to rpm = revolutions per minute.
  • Old records were made with 78 rpm - this changed later to 45 rpm (for singles) and 33 rpm for long playing records (LPs).

Hi,

Any day now, someone is going to ask 'What's a CD?'
