groaned in despair

Hello,

I have to make a sentence using these words together.

1. When the fielder dropped the catch, the captain groaned in despair.

2. When he was drowning , he groaned in despair.

Which one is correct?

I think both are correct. ) But does one grown in despair while drowning? I would be more likely to gurgle agitatedly.

I think both are correct. (In #2, did you mean drowning?) But does one grown in despair while drowning? I would be more likely to gurgle agitatedly.
