Can we use grinned instead of saying using the usual said, replied, etc.?

I think it's awful. Grinning is not a manner of speaking. It's punctuated wrong, too: "Oh, that was completely helpful, as always," John grinned. "Next time, tell us something useful." "John grinned" looks like a declarative sentence, but you want the reader, on the strength of that comma, to instantly realize it is not, that you have decide to get cu
